Ivanka’s New Rules for Excess, aka a summary of Women Who Work: Rewriting the Rules for Success

1. Be white
and get plastic surgery to look more Aryan
2. Be rich
and have a doting, sexual predator, con-artist millionaire dad
3. Plagiarize from Toni Morrison’s writing on slavery
and use white supremacy to support your companies
4. Toss around feminist phrases like maternity leave and equal pay
but ensure your own employees have neither
5. Pretend you’re a regular working gal
And use your family connections to get the Saudi’s
to donate $100 million to your fake feminist
nonprofit in support of female empowerment
6. Ignore the laughable irony of that feat
while smiling and nodding prettily, silent and
plastic, just like a Barbie doll.

For All the Grrls at Ariana Grande Concert, Manchester Arena, May 22, 2017

In so many ways we’re told
from girlhood
that we don’t matter
that our bodies, our thoughts,
our work and leisure

all of it
all of us
belongs to and
must serve
the patriarchy/nation-state
and its attendant hegemonic
racialized
gendered
classed
sexual
regional
religious
systems of control

girls are stupid and flighty
girls are too smart and dangerous
girls are weak and tractable
girls are rebellious and sinful
girls are just pawns of their fathers, mere “hosts”
girls are good for just one thing
girls must be watched and judged
girls need regulation and discipline
girls are vulnerable
girls are exploitable
girls are expendable

To all of that I say:

FUCK IT
FUCK OFF

girls are SO MUCH MORE
that’s why they fear us
GRRLS GROW INTO RIGHTEOUS, EFFECTIVE WOMYN
who love womyn and girls

so
never apologize
love yourselves
love your pop stars
love your music and dance to it
sing loud and long
love your girl culture
love your sisters girlfriends cousins moms aunties
hug them tightly
and dance and dance

you already know the secret
of grrl power
of girl joy
