If you are interested in supporting Habitat for Humanity, check out the opening of their “ReStore” on August 18 at 719 Swift St. in Santa Cruz. Hey, that’s my old neighborhood! It’s a re-sale shop that will specialize in furniture and items for home improvement. An article in the MercuryNews.com reports that there are already 700 such stores in the country.
Habitat: What We Build
“In the United States, over 1/3 of the people suffer from some form of housing problem.”
Co-manager, Mark Burden explains that this will be a welcoming place, very different from, say, Home Depot, or even Good Will: “We want it to look like a place you not only want to visit once, but come back to…We’re not like Home Depot. Our inventory will fluctuate dramatically from week to week, so if you want some unusual and hard-to-find things, come stop by and see what you can find.” They are looking for volunteers, so if you’d like to volunteer for a great cause, call them at 469-4663 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
“No handouts, no give-aways, just a little help…” Recipients of Habitat for Humanity homes have to show that they are capable of contributing to the building of the house and making payments; this “sweat equity” will eventually go back into building more houses for those in need.
